Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio has joined USA Network's "Law & Order: Criminal Intent," completing the casting transformation on the police procedural for its upcoming ninth season.
She will play the new captain taking over the Major Case Squad on the Wolf Films/Universal Cable Prods. series.
Mastrantonio's character, who comes from a working-class background, succeeds Capt. Danny Ross (Eric Bogosian), who headed the division for the past three years, following the departure of Capt. James Deakins (original cast member Jamey Sheridan).
Mastrantonio is one of two new faces on "L&O: CI" for next season, joining Saffron Burrows. The hires follow the exit of four regulars on the show: original stars Vincent D'Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe as well as Bogosian and new mom Julianne Nicholson, who is being replaced by Burrows.
With the departure of D'Onofrio, the cop drama is taking on a lighter tone. It centers on Jeff Goldblum, whose character Zach Nichols becomes the squad's top detective. Article

well she has been in alot of musicals so she should be able to accompany Nichols on the piano.
Perhaps they have decided to make LOCI into a musical...that should make it light enough for USA.
At this stage, LOCI as we understand it ,is dead anyway so what does it matter what they do next.
I think something like "Glee" would work very well on USA.They could call the first episode "Deathwish" instead of "Love sick".
Since I won't be watching after Vincent and Kate leave...I don't really care.
I have been reading a lot about Bonnie Hammer and I really think her favorite color is PINK much more so than BLUE. Don't get me wrong, I am all in favor of women in powerful places but the feminization of her networks and their shows is as much a theme as her BLUE SKY.
Take for example "SciFi", which is now "SyFy"...well, ain't that all cute and girlie. She said she was looking to appeal to women. Well, I am sure a word that is completely useless and has no meaning will do that! Really? Uh, no.
Sadly, I won't be tuning in at all next season for LawOrderCI.
I am just done.
They can cast Carrot Top for all I care. My LOCI-watching days will be over when the last shot of Goren fades out.
'Maid Marian' as the Captain of Major Case. You couldn't make it up!!!!!
Further proof they are DETERMINED to bury C.I. It's death throes will take place in a sea of 'lighter tones' but since no one will be watching, we'll be spared the sad spectacle of seeing it die. It's over for me with Vincent's departure anyway.
A new captain at this point is like using a teaspoon to bail water off the Titanic. What's the point? I love the idea of LOCI becoming a musical. Even Monk never got that light.
I enjoy Mary E., she's a wonderful actress. I enjoy Saffron, although her lips make me want to deflate them. I even enjoy Jeff, because he's fun, really.
BUT.....because of the way USA and the current powers that be have treated those that we love so ungraciously and with contempt, I will NOT be tuning in.
In the words of VDO, "go fuck yourselves." (them, not you guys. ;) )
Lighter tone? Try invisible. You don't get much lighter than that.
I hope she's got her next job lined up for after this one.
Oh, it just gets "worser and worser". I was thinking I might give the Goren/Eames-less LOCI a chance, but if they aren't even going to try to keep the original premise of the show, I'm with all of you who say you will stop watching after VDO and KE are gone. Note to USA, I will probably drop In Plain Sight as well since I only watched it because it was on after LOCI.
Why don't print that on a shirt "Go fuck yourself!"??And wear it as an insider protest!!!
It's amazing to me that Vincent & Katie were supposed to take a pay cut to continue. Now another big name added to the lineup. Goldblum is probably pulling in high 6 figures (if not a million per), and MaryElizabeth will probably make a nice chunk of change. Burrows - she's probably in line with Julianne's salary - so where did they save the money? They must think we are all stupid.
It wouldn't surprise me if NBC pulls CI back into the network fold either.
Stupid - they are all just stupid.
Perhaps each episode will end with them gathered in Central Park, where Jeff will play the piano, and they'll all sing 'Kum Bi Ya My Lord' around a camp fire, after solving the case of the missing dog/cat/rabbit/squirrel/hamster. Well, if it's 'lighter tones' they're after, there can't really be ANY 'Criminal Intent'involved at all.
Lizzie :(
what a giggle lizzie!
The "criminal intent" is in what they have done to the show!!!!
