LIVE AT NBC UNIVERSAL'S SUMMER PRESS DAY

Vincent D'Onofrio and Jeff Goldblum in Pasadena, CA for NBC Universal's Summer Press Day

Futon Critic, 4.24.09
By Brian Ford Sullivan

2:00 PM - USA's "LAW & ORDER: CRIMINAL INTENT" PANEL

Scheduled guests: Vincent D'Onofrio, Jeff Goldblum, Peter Jankowski

Go to Futon Critic to read their report.

IfMagazine.com, 4.24.09
by CARL CORTEZ

Location: Pasadena (NBC Universal Summer Press Day)

....Although the idea of rotating leads in the LAW & ORDER franchise came about two years ago because D’Onofrio wanted a little more time off (Chris Noth was the first to split headlining duties), the actor wouldn’t rule out pairing up with Goldblum in the future – especially since they have a natural chemistry with one another.

“There will be a lot of talking,” jokes D’Onofrio when and if that happens on CRIMINAL INTENT, though series executive producer Peter Jankowski adds, “next year, sure, but not this year.”

However, Jankoski does note Goldblum will pair up with D’Onofrio’s co-star Kathryn at the end of the season, since his on-screen partner Julianne Nicholson was on pregnancy leave.

“She couldn’t finish the last episode, so Katie Erbe is going to come in and play his partner for an episode and a half,” he adds.

Thoughts on CI's new season

Television Without Pity, 4.20.09
by Zach Oat

Why Law & Order: Criminal Intent is Awesome

The Law & Order franchise is not what it once was. The original series (plain old L&O) has gone through cast shake-up after shake-up, and just had one of its weakest seasons. Special Victims Unit is full of superstar talent -- America's sweethearts Mariska Hargitay and Chris Meloni, plus their cranky back-ups Ice-T and Richard Belzer -- but each episode of that show finds a way to ignore their special victims mandate. Only Criminal Intent, exiled to the USA Network, has continued to do what it does so well with the same two leads it's always had. It's the best show in the franchise, and it's only going to get better with this season's changes. If you didn't watch Sunday night's Season 8 premiere, here are our reasons for you to tune in for Episode 2.

1. Vincent D'Onofrio D'Owns It
D'Onofrio, who plays Det. Robert Goren, has been the face of CI since its start, and while "highly perceptive investigator" seems to be the new black (see The Mentalist, Lie to Me, Life), D'Onofrio has been playing the brilliant, well-read, multi-lingual Goren for seven years, and his mannerisms make him a fascinating character to watch and/or listen to. Goren switches from dropping subtle physical cues to screaming in a perp's face with ease, and if we're lucky he'll slip into a character to draw out a suspect. (Goren dressed like a mailman and dancing with headphones on was a fixture in promo commercials for a while, and is still endlessly entertaining.) And whether it's intentional or utterly coincidental, D'Onofrio/Goren's let himself go over the years, expanding horizontally and shaving rarely, which makes the size difference between himself and his shorter, tidier partner/handler Eames (Kathryn Erbe) even more dramatic/hysterical. A "Law & Order: CI" Mystery?

Last night, "Law & Order: CI" premiered but it wasn't the episode I was expecting.

The Dick Wolf series' new season was at first scheduled to return to USA last year; they sent out screeners and I watched an episode that picked up where we left off.

If you don't remember, that was when Robert Goren (Vincent D'Onofrio) found out that his mentor Declan Gage, had killed Goren's nemesis Nicole Wallace, that sociopathic Aussie con artist who had killed Bobby's brother Frank, then declared Bobby "free."

In that episode I watched Bobby was still dealing with his "freedom"; he had gone away and stayed with some family; he was kinda glum and reeling from the whole thing. You know, he's been through a lot lately, what with finding out his dad was a serial killer (played brilliantly by the late Roy Scheider), and with Nicole murdering his last family member. (His mom, also brilliantly played by Rita Moreno died in season 6.)

But that's not the episode that aired last night.... Full article

LO:CI Chef

Recordonline.com, 4.19.09
By Sheldon Scruggs

David Pacifico is in touch with the stars every day — that is, Jeff Goldblum, Vincent D'Onofrio, Chris Noth and Kathryn Erbe.

He's the official caterer for the TV show "Law and Order: Criminal Intent."

Pacifico, 40, talked to the Times Herald-Record about his life of feeding celebrities:

My son, Anthony, is a student at John Borden Middle School in Wallkill. When the school had career day last month, I put out a spread of food for the kids that's not unlike what I create on the set of "Law and Order" — only it's bigger.

I feed the cast and crew breakfast and lunch; that's about 110 people, six days a week for nine months out of the year. Not everyone can do my job. It's fast-paced and demanding. I have to be wherever the set is.

The hours are long, sometimes 21 hours. When the crew works for that long, they get cranky. My job is to make them happy and keep their morale up. What better way to do that than with food? Full article

Review of "Playing Dead"

Examiner.com, 4.18.09
by Christine Nyholm, Chicago Cable TV Examiner

USA Network’s Law & Order Criminal Intent premieres for season 8 with an episode called Playing Dead. The premiere episode stars Vincent D’Onofrio as Detective Robert Goren and Katherine Erbe as Detective Eames. Eric Bogosian returns as Captain Danny Ross. Guest starring in Playing Dead is Kathy Baker, a very fine actress. I was able to view advance review copy of Playing Dead, and found it both facinating and entertaining...

Detective Goren (Vincent D’Onofrio) went into some very dark places in Season 7, but many of his personal demons were put to rest at the end of the season . Goren is once again engaged with the case and the criminals. The genius detective is able to understand much of this case because of his on dysfunctional family upbringing, which he partially shares with one of the characters in the story to gain trust..."

...I was riveted with the story from beginning to end.

Law & Order: CI Returns for Another Exciting Season April 19

Blogcritics.org, 4.16.09
by Marta Hoelscher

The long wait for fans of Law & Order: Criminal Intent is over. The season eight premiere is airing this upcoming Sunday, April 19 at 9/8c on USA Network, and it's an exciting kick-off to this upcoming season.

...In this new episode the drug-addicted daughter of a city politician survives a hit on her blackmailing, dealer boyfriend. While investigating Goren and Eames uncover secrets and lies in this twisting tale. Kathy Bates gives a stellar performance as the grandmother of the teen.

Following last year's trend where we saw more of the background on Goren as well as Eames, Goren reveals a bit more about his childhood in trying to get through to this troubled teen. I've always loved D'Onofrio's intensity in his portrayal of Bobby Goren. It's refreshing to see a police detective whose quirks aren't drinking or doing drugs. As for Kathryn Erbe, what I really like there is that her portrayal of Eames is not over the top. Eames comes off as very tough, but with a definite softness to her. The two together have a great chemistry that plays well onscreen. The depth that both bring to their characters is amazing and fascinating to watch.

Q&A Session Transcript

Here is the transcript of the Online Media Q&A Session with Vincent D'Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe, hosted by New Media Strategies on April 15, 2009.

'Law & Order' twist: Erbe in, Nicholson out!

EW.com, 4.16.09
by Michael Ausiello

Law & Order: Criminal Intent is temporarily merging half of its A and B Teams.

Kathryn Erbe has agreed to fill in for the very pregnant Julianne Nicholson while the latter is on maternity leave, sources confirm to me exclusively.

The move means that for the final four episodes of CI's current eighth season (premiering this Sunday on USA), Erbe will alternate between her current partner, Vincent D'Onofrio, and Nicholson's new partner, Jeff Goldblum.

Hey, that wasn't nearly as scandalous as the accompanying headline seemed to imply!

TV Review: ..."the great Vincent D'Onofrio"

HollywoodChicago.com, 4.15.09
by BrianT

"Jeff Goldblum Joins the Cast of "Law and Order: Criminal Intent"

excerpted --
“Criminal Intent” has always been an intriguing installment of the Dick Wolf franchise, largely due to what I consider the best performance across all three versions including the original “Law & Order” and “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” - the work by the great Vincent D’Onofrio. This versatile and unique actor makes decisions that others wouldn’t even consider.

Just watch D’Onofrio work in the eighth season premiere of “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” as he uncovers something truly sinister after a murder reveals dark family secrets. D’Onofrio is fantastic, but you could sense him getting a little tired of this character and show over the years and it seems right to inject some new life into the most consistently on-the-bubble of cancellation installments of “Law & Order”.
