The Narrows -- Film Review

Hollywood Reporter, 6.29.09
By Sheri Linden

Working-class boy with artistic aspirations is caught between the Brooklyn mob and Manhattan dreams in this been-there, done-that drama. Director Francois A. Velle pays admirable attention to setting and detail, yet little feels fresh or fully alive in "The Narrows," which recently bowed in New York and Los Angeles.

With echoes of "Saturday Night Fever," "Fingers" and "Mean Streets," as well as countless other crime sagas, the indie film finds Mike Manadoro (Kevin Zegers) at a crossroads. His widowed father (Vincent D'Onofrio), a former sanitation worker living on disability and his earnings as a bookie, is too proud to let Mike accept a university scholarship. So when Bay Ridge kingpin Tony (Titus Welliver) offers Mike a high-paying courier job, he sees a solution to his tuition woes.

...Zegers, who was terrific in "Transamerica," has charisma as Mike but is not entirely convincing as brooding artist or tough guy. Most of the performances are by the well-worn numbers, with two exceptions. Tony's icy menace has the weight of hard-won authority in Welliver's hands. And D'Onofrio's Vinny, by far the film's most complex and compelling character, suggests a far more interesting story than the one that unfolds onscreen.

Brooklyn author's 'Heart' is in 'The Narrows'

By Meredith Deliso

As a kid, the first movie Tim McLoughlin ever saw was at the Pavilion 8 (which some of you may remember as the old Sanders). It was 1964, the film was “The Incredible Mr. Limpet,” starring Don Knotts.

“That place was a cathedral,” remembers McLoughlin, a Brooklyn native who grew up in Bensonhurst and now, after stints in several Brooklyn neighborhoods, currently resides in Brooklyn Heights (read an essay of his about the theater here).

Today, when the author goes to the Park Slope theater, his own movie is on the screen: “The Narrows,” based on his 2001 book “Heart of the Old Country,” published by Brooklyn-based publisher Akashic Books.

How “Heart” came to be published itself is the stuff worthy of cinema. A Brooklyn court clerk, McLoughlin knew he had a story in him, and in his late 30s, started writing a coming-of-age story about a 19 year old, Mike, going to school part time and working for Big Lou’s Car Service, on the periphery of organized crime in Bay Ridge.

....The biggest name attached to the film has to be D’Onofrio’s, who plays Mike’s father with a savviness yet also a sadness that impressed McLoughlin.
“He told me later that he based his physical mannerisms and some of his patterns of speech on an old relative of his who was from Bensonhurst,” says the author. “It worked really well.”

Best Movie Kiss

SciFiGuy.ca, 6.28.09

The Best of the Kissing Contest Moments

My favorite movie kiss has to be when Robert E. Howard (played by Vincent D'Onofrio) finally kisses Novalyn Price (played by Renee Zellweger) in The Whole Wide World. The first time I saw that kiss I felt a jolt...well, let's just say all the way down to my toes. And it's happened every time I have seen it since. I have to say that has never happened with any other movie kiss. I thought Vincent perfectly captured the tortured pulp fiction author (Weird Tales - Conan the Barbarian) from the 1930s and Renee was perfect as the educated and independent teacher who falls for the brilliant writer. This movie was based on the true story written by Novalyn Price in her book about her passionate relationship with Bob Howard. It's a wonderful film and a compelling love story. Full article

What drives D’Onofrio to act so crazy (and not be bored)

Metro International, 6.24.09
by HEIDI PATALANO

The psychotic type

He’s a big bear of a man, that Vincent D’Onofrio is. While we sit over a plateful of appetizers at the premiere of his latest project, the indie film “The Narrows,” with his imposing figure, D’Onofrio seems to maintain the same brand of intensity that inhabits many of his characters. The fact that he tends to play the psychotic type isn’t entirely an uncalculated decision.

“I’ve played a lot of baddies,” he admits. “They’re less boring and you work less. You work a few days, then the lead guy works his ass off. It’s perfect.”

But D’Onofrio is no slouch. The method actor does a tremendous amount of research for each role he takes on. Given that the Bensonhurst, Brooklyn native plays a Bay Ridge, Brooklyn native in “The Narrows,” he didn’t have to look too far for inspiration.

“There were a lot of men there like the guy I play,” he explains. “I never played a Brooklyn guy — a guy like I would’ve been if I didn’t get out of Brooklyn.”

It’s a good thing he did. Otherwise fans of “Law and Order: Criminal Intent” may not have been such devoted viewers over the past eight seasons.

When asked how he keeps the role interesting for himself, he points out what we’re really asking.

“People ask me if I’m bored yet, and it’s a difficult thing to answer because nobody else seems to be bored,” he says. “I don’t want to say I’m bored because the audience is still into it.”

Umm… it sounds like he’s bored to us.

“Eventually I’m going to have to leave. I don’t know when. Not any time soon, but — it’s boring for me to talk about, I’ll say that.”

The best performance belongs to Vincent D’Onofrio

Movie Review: The Narrows
NY Times, 6.18.09
By STEPHEN HOLDEN

Until it implodes with preposterous plot manipulations, “The Narrows,” directed by Fran├žois A. Velle, can be appreciated as the film equivalent of a reasonably palatable pasta dish concocted from a familiar recipe and served in a no-frills restaurant.

Its eager-beaver protagonist, Mike Manadoro (Kevin Zegers), is an aspiring photographer from an Italian-American enclave in the Bay Ridge neighborhood of Brooklyn, and is torn between making good money transporting mysterious packages for the crooked local kingpin (Titus Welliver) and studying his craft in Manhattan.

........The best performance belongs to Vincent D’Onofrio as Mike’s widowed father, a sanitation worker turned neighborhood bookie who is living on workers’ compensation after an accident. The movie, adapted by Tatiana Blackington from Tim McLoughlin’s crime novel “Heart of the Old Country,” sabotages Mr. D’Onofrio’s performance with a final plot contrivance that is as cute as it is unconvincing.

'The Narrows' is familiar story with authentic ring

A contemporary drama set between the contrasting territories of Brooklyn and Manhattan, The Narrows follows a familiar story about a character who strives to escape his humble beginnings.

Mike Manadoro lives with his widower father, Vinny, in Bay Ridge, a working-class Italian neighborhood. Mike’s dad is a retired sanitation worker living on disability. Vinny supplements his disability benefits by being a bookie, a job that requires him to pay protection money to the mob.

The Narrows, a modestly budgeted independent film being released today in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Dallas, Philadelphia, Baton Rouge and several other cities, stars Kevin Zegers (Transamerica, The Jane Austen Book Club and Dawn of the Dead) as Mike, a young man who wants to be a professional photographer. Vincent D’Onofrio co-stars as Vinny, the father who doesn’t understand his creative son and can’t afford to send him to college.

......Handsome young leading man Zegers gets his earnest artist and good-fellow-in-training across, but it’s screen veteran D’Onofrio, shuffling around on a cane, mumbling and musing about his often disappointing life, who stealthily steals the picture.

From Bay Ridge to big screen

Court clerk novelist's movie 'The Narrows' to open at Pavilion

NY Daily News, 6.16.09
By Jake Pearson

Tim McLoughlin uses bits and pieces of elevator chit-chat and hallway conversations he's picked up on the job in his successful crime fiction.

Now the 50-year-old Brooklyn Supreme Court clerk, who grew up in Bay Ridge, has turned his childhood memories and stories into a film that opens across the country on Friday.

"It's literally like an out-of-body experience, seeing these scenes that you thought of being acted out on the screen," said McLoughlin, who first told the film's coming-of-age tale in his novel, "Heart of the Old Country."

"The Narrows" stars another Bay Ridge native, "Law & Order's" Vincent D'Onofrio - but the two hadn't met before filming began.

Vincent in "The Irishman"

Vincent D'Onofrio (second from right) as John Nardi in "The Irishman".

Ray Stevenson, Christopher Walken and Val Kilmer will play the leads in "The Irishman," a crime story that Jonathan Hensleigh will direct. Greene was a violent Irish-American gangster who competed with the Italian mob in 1970s Cleveland and ended up provoking a countrywide turf war that crippled the mafia. Walken will play the loan shark and nightclub owner Shondor Birns, and Kilmer is a Cleveland police detective who befriends Greene. "The Irishman" is currently filming in Detroit.

Vincent D'Onofrio portrays 'John Nardi' - a ruthless Italian mobster who takes Danny Greene (Ray Stevenson) under his wing. This is a lead role. John Nardi is rival to Cleveland Mafia boss Jack "Jack White" Licavoli (Tony LoBianco).
