NEW YORK, Nov. 9 – Tony-award winning director Chase McHuan’s much-anticipated stage show, Ebenezer Scrooge Presents: Matt Pinfield’s Holiday Extravaganza, is undoubtedly this winter’s most coveted ticket. The one night only event, scheduled for New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom on December 2nd, sold out in a matter of minutes, leaving many would-be concert goers on an unexpected scavenger hunt for Yuletide cheer.

With second-hand tickets selling in upwards of $6000 on Craigslist, a popular classifieds-listing site, most can’t justify, or for that matter, afford, to dish out such a large sum of cash, especially in today’s economy. Erin Kent, a single mother of three, is one of those enraged by the price gouging. With her youngest child, Robert, crying by her side, Erin makes no attempt to hide her feelings: “I find it absolutely disgusting that there are individuals out there who show no regard to the message of selflessness intended by [Ebenezer Scrooge Presents: Matt Pinfield’s Holiday Extravaganza]. Fueled by greed, these scoundrels are only out for their own financial gain. Scrooge would be sick. I know I am.”

After days of widespread protesting, the public finally received the news they’d been waiting for. In a televised address, Chase McHuan announced a second installment of Matt Pinfield’s Holiday Extravaganza, stating he felt a sense of "duty" to "re-affirm the good in this world.” McHuan also urged those viewing to “let go of any contempt,” and to win over those lacking in spirit “one smile at a time.”

While Matt Pinfield and Leslie Fram will reprise their roles as Ebenezer Scrooge and Tiny Tim, respectively, part two of Matt Pinfield’s Holiday Extravaganza will see a change in the musical line-up, featuring the melodies of David Gray, Pete Yorn, and Company of Thieves.

The event is taking place Sunday, December 6th, at Manhattan Center’s Hammerstein Ballroom.

Brooklynite Vincent D’Onofrio Stars In 'Staten Island'

PIX11, NY --Actor Vincent D'Onofrio stopped by the studio today to talk about his role in the gripping new film Staten Island.

D'Onofrio stars alongside Ethan Hawke and Seymour Cassel in this New York tale about three men trying to make it big. When the three cross paths with a blue-collar worker named Sully Haverson (Hawke), things take a turn for the worse. The story catches fire when Haverson decides to crack the safe of Parmie Tarzo (D'Onofrio), a smalltime mob boss, in the hopes that he will be able to provide a better future for his child.

D'Onofrio is a native New Yorker who was born in Brooklyn. D'Onofrio both acts and directs, but he first attracted attention with his role as Private Leonard 'Gomer Pyle' Lawrence in the acclaimed Full Metal Jacket, and more recently as Detective Robert Goren in Law & Order: Criminal Intent.

MANHATTAN SUPREME COURT — A sophomore class from Harlem's Coalition School for Change was treated to a star-studded field trip to Manhattan Supreme Court as part of Juror Appreciation Day on Thursday.


Manhattan celebrities Jon Stewart, Chris Noth and Vincent D'Onofrio shared jury duty stories with an audience still two to three years away from juror eligibility at the annual Juror Appreciation Day event.

"I was on a jury before I became famous, and at the time I needed the 10 bucks," Stewart said.

Stewart, who was sporting a gray hoodie and khakis, said it's better to serve than to ignore summonses.

"They won't let up. They'll keep calling you," Stewart said. "And it's illegal, right?"

Stewart couldn't help but sprinkle in a few jokes with his advice for the young audience.

"You can get out of jury duty if you work hard and get your own show," "The Daily Show" host added.

The discussion wasn't all laughs and giggles. The celebrities talked to the students about the importance of overcoming the negative peer pressure they face everyday.



D'Onofrio shared a personal story with the high schoolers about his delinquent youth.

"I was stealing cars when I was 11-years-old," D'Onofrio said. "A fireman straightened me out and I never looked back."



Stewart was a big hit with the 15 and 16-year-olds from Harlem, but it was "Law and Order" stars Noth and D'Onofrio who received the loudest cheers from the young crowd.

Interview: Staten Island's writer/director James DeMonaco

Are you ready for your close-up, Staten Island?

"Let’s hear it for New York, New York, New York" ... yeah, in the now-ubiquitous words of Jay-Z and Alicia Keys, these streets can certainly make you feel brand new, the lights will inspire you and make you feel there’s nothing you can’t do, etc., etc.

But sometimes living in the shadow of Manhattan can sting, too.

Writer-director James DeMonaco tackles that reality in his new film, "Staten Island," opening tomorrow at Eltingville’s Atrium Cinema and the Village East in Manhattan.

When word of the films’ limited, Oscar-qualifying release reached the Island two weeks ago, local defenders of Italian-American honor cried foul over its "stereotypical" portrayal of S.I. as "a popular haven for mobsters and a choice dumping ground for their victims."

Outrage ensued. Protests were planned. Too bad they hadn’t even seen the film yet.

DeMonaco says his quirky dark comedy was never intended to be the definitive cinematic representation of Staten Island, but rather a highly personal "fairy tale" inspired by his beloved home. He also hopes Islanders will give it a chance before they rally to shut it down.

Q. So, you actually grew up on the South Shore, right?

A. I was born in Brooklyn, and moved at the age of 2 to Prince’s Bay ... Yeah, I went to Tottenville High School, played baseball, graduated in 1987. Went to Rutgers and then NYU for film, but I quit (laughs). But no, I don’t consider myself to be from Brooklyn in any way. I have no memory of it.

Q. S.I.’s "Forgotten Borough" status is confronted head-on in your film’s opening scene. Was it important for you not to tippy-toe around the second-class New Yorker thing?

A. I guess that was the inception of the whole idea for this film. Growing up here, there was always this feeling of being insignificant or forgotten. That’s the seed that made me create the story’s three archetypes: The mobster, the deli worker and the septic tank cleaner. Everything came from that sense of insignificance and fighting against it.

Q. Are there any true stories interwoven into the plot?

A. The feelings in the film were inspired by the truth more than the actual people, per se.

Growing up in New York, we all knew mobsters. You knew who they were, where they lived. I wanted to take the cliché and flip it. And I worked in a deli, so I always wanted to put a deli up on the screen. As for the septic tank cleaner, my cousins from Brooklyn always made fun of us for not being able to take long showers on Staten Island, because we didn’t have a sewer, we had a septic tank.

Other than that, this is just a fairy tale of the Island; the fable I wanted to create. But the feeling of being forgotten is very true.

Q. Whether it was perceived or real, when did you first experience the S.I. prejudice?

A. When I went to NYU, I always got the feeling we were looked down upon.

But even before that, every night when I watched the news with my Dad, and they would do the weather report, they would do every borough but Staten Island. They skipped right over us. I’d ask, "Wait, why did they leave us out?!"

It’s the same thing with the Zagat Guide: There are only a handful of Staten Island restaurants in there. You know there are other restaurants that are good, that should be listed.

And when I was a kid in the ‘80s, I remember hearing we were going to secede from New York City and go to Jersey. I thought, "Are we quitting? Or are they just giving us away? Do they not care about us?"

Q. I’m sure you’re sick of hearing about this, but did the cries of Italian-American defamation surprise you?

A. I never wanted to look down on or create a negative portrait of the Island. The stereotype exists — you can’t avoid it. The New York mobster exists. The Staten Island mobster exists. As an Italian-American, it’s such a small part of our culture. Knowing all of the great things Italian-Americans have done and will go on to do, I’m just not that sensitive to it. Like I said, I just wanted to take the cliché, address it and immediately flip it when he goes to the pool. It’s tongue and cheek, with an odd tone not to be taken completely seriously. This is about three characters searching for another way to exist in the universe. I never intended it to be a docudrama of the Island.

Q. Was "Staten Island" a hard film to get made?

A. I’m really lucky. In the indie film world, it’s really rare to get to make a personal film. It’s even harder now, with the market crash. I wrote the script right before "Assault on Precinct 13," six or seven years ago. We were originally talking to Ray Liotta ("Goodfellas"), but then we thought that might be too much of a cliché. So we moved on to Vincent D’Onofrio, who’s never played an Italian-American mobster. Overall, I’m really happy with the result. Full interview

Actress visits city school to spark interest in literature

Actress Kathryn E. Erbe of "Law and Order: Criminal Intent" discussed literature with Watertown High School students Monday, kicking off the Actors and Writers Book Club.

The book club is a new organization that will send an actor and a writer to high schools to discuss works of literature with students, in an effort to get students excited about reading and writing. Ms. Erbe said she decided to get involved with the book club because she loves to read and she thought it would be a good opportunity to talk to youths.

"I've been a voracious reader since I was 13, so that's why I got involved with the book club," Ms. Erbe said. "And I know high school can be hard, so I wanted to talk to kids of that age, too."

Book club founder Thomas P. Kelly discussed literature with Watertown students. Mr. Kelly is a novelist who wrote the book "Payback," and is the literacy director for the Writers Guild of America, East.

Watertown High School was chosen for the launch of the program because of a collaboration between Mr. Kelly and Watertown English teacher Emily G. Sprague. Watertown is also the type of location the book club wants to target, because it's far from a major metropolitan area, Mr. Kelly said.

"We're staying away from places like New York City, because there, you can throw a stone 10 feet and hit actors and writers," he said. "We want to go to places like Watertown, where it might be more exciting for someone to come to talk to students."

Ms. Erbe read an excerpt from the book "The Rules of the Game," written by Amy Tan. Then Mr. Kelly discussed the piece from a writer's perspective. The book centers on a young girl whose family moved from China to San Francisco's Chinatown.

Ms. Erbe used books as an escape when she was growing up, and as a way to better learn about herself and other people, she told students.

Kathryn Erbe narrates new documentary

Kathryn Erbe who has played Detective Alexandra Eames since 2001 will be narrating a new documentary.

Entitled "The Vanishing City," the subject matter of this doc is the disappearance of the small businesses that was the glue of parts of New York City. Many people are interviewed regarding the loss of these small businesses.

"The Vanishing City" will also discuss the repercussions of the changing landscape. Big chain stores have replaced the small mom and pop type stores. The feel of community has been destroyed.

Neighborhoods that were known for their artists were taken over by more wealthy occupants. Luxury highrises replace the smaller dwellings that have been the homes of many lower income tenants.

Miss Erbe will be leaving "Law & Order: CI" early in the next season. It will be nice to see her in different roles.

"The New Tenants" is directed by Danish Joachim Back, currently living in New York. The film is produced by a team of five – Sam Bisbee, Tivi Magnusson, Erika Hampson, Christian Potalivo and Johanne Stryhn Hørby – for M&M Productions and Park Pictures.

'Criminal Intent' has a new captain

Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio has joined USA Network's "Law & Order: Criminal Intent," completing the casting transformation on the police procedural for its upcoming ninth season.

She will play the new captain taking over the Major Case Squad on the Wolf Films/Universal Cable Prods. series.

Mastrantonio's character, who comes from a working-class background, succeeds Capt. Danny Ross (Eric Bogosian), who headed the division for the past three years, following the departure of Capt. James Deakins (original cast member Jamey Sheridan).

Mastrantonio is one of two new faces on "L&O: CI" for next season, joining Saffron Burrows. The hires follow the exit of four regulars on the show: original stars Vincent D'Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe as well as Bogosian and new mom Julianne Nicholson, who is being replaced by Burrows.

With the departure of D'Onofrio, the cop drama is taking on a lighter tone. It centers on Jeff Goldblum, whose character Zach Nichols becomes the squad's top detective. Article
