There was more than the usual Law and Order in Town when acclaimed actor Vincent D'Onofrio came to town to watch his sister Elizabeth exchange vows with local musician Shawn Halladay. Elizabeth's film "The Chocolate Fetish" was selected by the Naples Film Festival and played to a standing-room-only crowd in October.

Rib City looks to expand

Rib City claims a winning recipe, and not just for baby backs.

The 20-year-old Fort Myers-based barbecue chain is poised to add both franchisee- and company-owned locations next year, and expects to close out 2009 with an estimated $30 million in gross sales, up from $28 million in 2008. Only a handful of its franchise outlets have closed during the regional and national recessions.

Financial performance at the Florida restaurants - all company-owned - "are flat or up over last year," said company President Craig Peden.

Peden credits Rib City's ability to survive and thrive to "a culmination of a lot of things: the service, the quality of food, the atmosphere, the staff. These separate a restaurant from being just OK, to being better."

Rib City is a Southwest Florida native. Craig Peden confirmed that Gerry Pastore, now living in Illinois, hatched the concept in 1989. Pastore joined forces with the Pedens, who now own and operate the chain, which has grown to 28 restaurants in six states.

Franchise holders typically are "either from here or have family here," Craig Peden said. "They come eat at our restaurant, and love the food."

One example: Vincent D'Onofrio, a star of TV's "Law & Order: Criminal Intent." In 2007, he became part-owner of the Rib City in Sandy, Utah.

Peden said D'Onofrio partnered with sister and brother-in-law Toni and Ron Jorgensen in the franchise. The D'Onofrios got acquainted with Rib City through family get-togethers in Florida.

Another D'Onofrio sister, actress and writer Elizabeth D'Onofrio, formerly was a daytime bartender at The Veranda, Peden said, adding the D'Onofrio siblings' mother lives in Cape Coral.

Rib City, as a corporation, has taken a low-key approach to franchising promotion that includes occasionally putting informational leaflets on restaurant tables.

Lily Fund effort unites neighbors for a good cause

Recently East Villagers gathered twice to mark the beginning of The Lily Fund, Inc., a nonprofit group dedicated to providing hope and happiness to families living with pediatric brain tumors. The Lily Fund was started in response to a local family — residents of the Christodora House on Avenue B — experiencing the trauma and uncertain future of having their young daughter diagnosed with a nonoperable brain tumor. What began as a group of friends and neighbors providing informal yet critical help has morphed into a full-fledged foundation with the ultimate aim of providing funds for research that, for whatever reason, are remarkably scarce.

The first event was a comedy show at The Laugh Lounge on Essex St., Nov. 20. The fundraiser was the brainchild of Lily Fund board member Marijke Briggs and Carla Johnston. Johnston, a comic and actress, organized the lineup that was emcee’d by Preston Simpson and headlined by Brad Zimmerman in addition to hosting a slew of wonderful New York comics. An eclectic crowd gathered inside and out.

“It was great to see such an extended community sharing a great time, united for a great reason,” said Briggs.

On the next day, 45 families, from the East Village and beyond, streamed through the Bathhouse Studios on E. 11th St. for a “holiday family photo shoot” fundraiser.

Beyond fundraising, the events had another aim. Said Mud Coffee owner and board member Nina Berott: “The activities The Lily Fund produces to raise awareness and funds for pediatric brain tumor research are an example of what can happen when a community gets together to support a cause. The energy of love the friends of The Lily Fund have for each other creates an unbeatable strength that can change anything. The East Village is the critical mass in our case to spread the word and the good vibes to make a difference for all children and their families that are affected.”

...Also participating was Carin van der Donk, with her husband Vince and her sons Elias and Luca.

Ever since we got word that there was a screenplay based on Peter Biskind's incendiary book was making the rounds (Jeffrey Wells) and there was activity on the production that a crew were in Cannes filming, but now we got word that Down and Dirty Pictures (a 10 million dollar production) has got a great cast in place (Hugh Dancy, Matthew Perry, Andy Serkis, Sally Hawkins, Elias Koteas, Bobby Cannavale, Toby Jones and Michael Rispoli) with Scren Daily reporting that Vincent D'Onofrio is poised to take on the "role" of Weinstein.

Written by Joshua James and Dean Craig, this is based on Peter Biskind's non-fiction book Down and Dirty Pictures: Miramax, Sundance, and the Rise of Independent Film. This is about the mavericks who helped to create, mold, and later reinvent the modern day independent film industry. Featuring a stellar ensemble cast and cameos from Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez, this riveting story charts the rise of the Sundance Film Festival, how Sex, Lies, and Videotape and Pulp Fiction got made and the intense rivalry between Harvey Weinstein's Miramax and Bingham Ray's October Films as the two companies slug it out for pre-eminence in the world of early 90's indie filmmaking.

Vincent D'Onofrio played Orson Welles in Tim Burton's 'Ed Wood,' and now he's preparing to portray another one-of-a-kind Hollywood mogul.

Screen Daily reports that D'Onofrio will take on the role of Miramax Films co-founder Harvey Weinstein in 'Down and Dirty,' an adaptation of Peter Biskind's nonfiction bestseller, 'Down and Dirty Pictures: Miramax, Sundance, and the Rise of Independent Film.' The film will be produced by Yamani Pictures, which also has director Bill Condon's Richard Pryor biopic 'Is It Something I Said' (starring Eddie Murphy) on its upcoming production slate.

Biskind's 'Down and Dirty Pictures' is another of the author's no-holds-barred examinations of Hollywood, concentrating on the independent film movement of the '90s, of which Miramax was a major player. Biskind is also the author of 'Easy Riders, Raging Bulls,' which chronicled the entertainment industry from the late '60s through the '70s.

We think Vincent D'Onofrio's intensity, eccentricity and larger-than-life physicality make him the perfect choice to play Harvey Weinstein. What remains to be seen is if the film adaptation of 'Down and Dirty' is able (or willing) to capture the book's alternately oddly affectionate and unapologetically scathing portrait of the Miramax man.

Vincent D’Onofrio is being lined up to play Harvey Weinstein in Yamani Pictures’ Down And Dirty, an adaptation of Peter Biskind’s Hollywood tell-all beststeller.

The casting development emerged as international event production and talent management company 7th Level Entertainment Group announced it had signed a deal to support Yamani Pictures’ 2010-15 feature slate with tours and events.

In return Yamani will invest an undisclosed sum to provide an acquisitions fund to 7th Level, a wholly owned subsidiary of California-based Signature Devices.

Besides Down And Dirty, other titles on Yamani’s 2010-11 production slate include Bill Condon’s Richard Pryor film Is It Something I Said starring Eddie Murphy, and Only The Hood Dies Young with Bruce Willis, DMX and Mickey Rourke.

7th Level CEO R J Bucaria and Yamani CEO Robert Yasin Wright announced the deal this week.

Guess who’s going to play Richard Pryor and Harvey Weinstein? - thanks Judy!

As a rule I don’t spend too much time perusing announcements of upcoming movies. (It’s all I can do to deal with the ones opening next week, much less next year). But my eye was caught by two titles on the 2010-2011 slate for Yamani Pictures.

The first one will be Is It Something I Said, starring Eddie Murphy as Richard Pryor. You knew it was only a matter of time, right?

Here’s the one I’ll be looking forward to: Down And Dirty Pictures, based on Peter Biskind’s book about the “indie” film movement of the 1990s, and starring Vincent D’Onofrio as Harvey Weinstein, the one-time Buffalo concert promoter who became the most feared man in the business since Louis B. Meyer. I’ve been a fan of D’Onofrio ever since his psycho turn in Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket. He’s played a wide range of characters, and I can’t help but wonder which of his faces the casting director had in mind when picturing him as Weinstein.

LAWRENCE FRENCH: Richard, you worked with Vincent D’Onofrio on The Newton Boys, and Christian says he suggested several Hollywood actors to play the part when you first met, although he wouldn’t say who they were. Did you ever consider Vincent D’Onofrio to play Orson Welles?

RICHARD LINKLATER: No, because although I know Vince, that scene he did in Ed Wood convinced me all the more to go with an unknown actor. Look at how you see the one scene Vince did in Ed Wood. You are saying, “Vince is looking kind of like Welles, but he’s not quite like him,” so your critical antennae is going up, because you are judging the performance and you are not really experiencing the performance. So I thought the magic of the cinema could only take place if we used an unknown actor to play Welles. I felt it would happen more naturally if we went with somebody who was unknown. I thought you might more readily think you were hanging out with Orson Welles in 1937. Full article

The Brand Manager: Dick Wolf's Family of Crime Dramas Took Advance Planning

Former advertising executive Dick Wolf got his start in television writing for shows like Hill Street Blues and Miami Vice. But his greatest accomplishment is Law & Order, which mastered the TV-show-as-brand concept by cornering the market on cops-and-courts procedurals. (This year it ties Gunsmoke's record for longest-running scripted television program.) L&O laid the groundwork for two successor series: Law & Order: SVU and Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Wolf, one of the influential television industry players interviewed for TVGuide.com's Best of the Decade section, talked with us about the germ of the idea that led to his gritty TV empire. He also told us what he watches.

TVGuide.com: Tell me about the conception of Law & Order as an idea. How did you pitch it?
Dick Wolf: In 1988, you could not give away hour-long shows in syndication; you could only sell half-hour shows. So the original thinking was to try to make an hour-long show that could be split in half and sold as two half-hour shows. We thought about a bunch of things, including night and day, life and death... law and order obviously moved to the front of the pack. There had never been a show about prosecutors and there had never been a split-format show. It seemed like an opportunity to capitalize on two openings in the marketplace. Luckily, we didn't have to split them because I really don't think it would have worked.

TVGuide.com: When it comes to spin-offs, people tend to be a little cynical. When it came time to spin-off Law & Order, what was your initial reaction?
Wolf: Well, first of all, it wasn't a spin-off. It came out of a two-hour movie called Exiled with Chris Noth after he had left the show. I didn't think that a movie called Exiled would get the type of promotion or notice that would inform the public of what it was so it was originally called Exiled: A Law & Order Movie, and it became the highest-rated movie of the week of the year on NBC. That sort of clicked on a light bulb that said we can probably do this again with a new series.

But it's not a spin-off. None of the characters were ever in Law & Order that did SVU. I came out of advertising and I did a lot of work with Procter & Gamble, where nothing is better than a brand extension and nothing is worse than a brand extension that doesn't work. So there was a lot of pressure to come up with an idea that was unique enough. The one thing I knew that people have an insatiable interest in is sex — the original title was Sex Crimes — but Barry Diller didn't want to have "sex" in the title so we went with the sex crimes unit's official name [Special Victims Unit].

Then the third one was sort of obvious. Gee, we have two that work; why don't we have a third? Vincent D'Onofrio was really the only person that we had to go to. He wouldn't do TV at that point. I told him the show was basically Sherlock Holmes, completely different from L&O or SVU.

I've said for years that this is not a franchise, it's a brand. CSI, and this is not a put-down, CSI is a franchise and a franchise to me is The Palm [restaurant]. If you want to get a steak, you know that whether you're in Chicago, New York, L.A., or San Francisco, you go to the Palm and you're going to get a great steak. A brand is Mercedes: It doesn't matter which one you buy, you're going to get a really good car. It's a subtle but very distinct and overwhelmingly important difference.

Guessing what short films Academy voters might select used to involve little more than a shot in the dark. It's still a tricky business -- but with the Friday announcement of the live-action shortlist that narrowed the field to 10, at least we can get a look at a manageable field of contenders.

In recent years the voters have gone for black comedy (Martin McDonagh's "Six Shooter"), gritty reality (Andrea Arnold's "Wasp"), slick comedy (Ari Sandel's "East Bank Story") and Holocaust melodrama (Jochen Alexander Freydank's "Toyland"). This year's shortlisted films include most of those elements (but no Holocaust, thankfully); based on nothing but a smattering of information, a few trailers and some reviews, I'm thinking that "The Door" and "Miracle Fish" have strong shots this time around.

But let's face it, nobody really knows what they'll go for. Here are some trailers, photos and info to help slightly clarify a confusing picture:

The Danish-American coproduction, "The New Tenants", a short fiction film directed by Joachim Back, is shortlisted for an Academy Award Nomination.

The original screenplay of "The New Tenants" is by Anders Thomas Jensen, the screen adaptation by David Rakoff. An Academy Award laureate himself, Jensen has received three Oscar nominations, one of them leading to a win for the short fiction "Election Night".

Synopsis: A prying neighbor, a glassy-eyed drug dealer, and a husband brandishing both a weapon and a vendetta, make up the welcome wagon in the darkly satirical short film "The New Tenants". Set amidst the as-yet-unopened boxes and the hopes for a fresh start of two men on what might just be the worst moving day ever, their new apartment reveals its terrifying history in a film that is by turns funny, frightening, and unexpectedly romantic.

"The New Tenants" is directed by Danish Joachim Back, currently living in New York. The film is produced by a team of five – Sam Bisbee, Tivi Magnusson, Erika Hampson, Christian Potalivo and Johanne Stryhn Hørby – for M&M Productions and Park Pictures.

8am - The world's crush - Vincent D'Onofrio - stopped by the studio with George "Geronimo" Gerkie. The latter performed "18 Wheels of Christmas" live on-air, instilling holiday spirit across the tri-state area.
