Local extras fill 'Sister Spirit' set

August 12, 2010

ALBANY -- Rita Powers has cast extras for feature films in New York City and big Bollywood productions in India, but nothing compared with the ease of casting nearly 250 extras from the Capital Region for the independent movie "Sister Spirit."

"Everybody in Albany was fabulous. I've never had a situation where all the extras I booked actually showed up. Every single extra showed up in Albany and they were enthusiastic and excited," she said.

After film crews spent nearly two weeks shooting scenes in Albany, Saratoga Springs, Troy, Menands and Cropseyville, they wrapped up production locally earlier this week and filming moved to New York City.

"Sister Spirit" is a low-budget indie project written by comedy writer and actor June Raphael and Casey Wilson, a "Saturday Night Live" alumna who had small roles in "Julie & Julia" and "Bride Wars." Raphael and Wilson are also the co-stars of the comedy, which features two sisters who are failed models en route to a beauty pageant reunion. It's a zany buddy movie chick flick that's been likened to "The Hangover" and "Dumb and Dumber." The cast includes Alicia Silverstone, Jon Cryer and Vincent D'Onofrio. The project was called "Ass Backwards" in an earlier iteration.

Sister Spirit (Assbackwards) left NY after 8/15 because they bounced all the paychecks to the crew and knowingly issued hundreds of union (SAG) and non-union payroll vouchers to actors that were worthless (meaning they never deposited any funds in the payroll services account) They kept talking about investors dropping out as an excuse and then exclaimed that they had "new investors" in order to get people to continue to work..all the while just trying to get as much filming done before people realized it was all is now oct and they are still talking about getting new investors and that "soon" people will be paid.
how do you go into production with no money ?

In my eyes these people are criminals..
