LAW & ORDER: CRIMINAL INTENT IS BACK!!

Here’s some great news for TV junkies who still need their fill of unpredictable “Detective Robert Goren” (Vincent D’Onofrio),” Law & Order: Criminal Intent is coming back for a tenth and final season. Talks are underway to also bring D’Onofrio’s co-star Kathryn Erbe back to the fold (Jeff Goldblum recently announced his exit from the show). One of the reasons for the renewal is that the USA network is also in the Dick Wolf business, as they they have also given the producer a pilot commitment for a new project. The 10th season of L&O: CI consists of eight episodes, but and Wolf is hinting that this may not be the final season of the beloved series. “Only time will tell if this is a fond farewell or a renaissance for Detective Robert Goren,” said Wolf in a statement. “But everyone is ecstatic about going back to work on a show that’s a passion for all of us.” New episodes of Law & Order: Criminal Intent starts next year.

I thought I'd be doing back-flips of joy at this news; but I'm not, or at least, not yet. Put bluntly, the show hasn't been worthy of Vincent's talents since the original writing team left at the end of Season 7. As long as Walon Green is gone, we're not just expected to have mass collective amnesia over Season 9 and they get some quality writers in, I'll be intrigued to discover how they plausibly bring back a detective who wasn't just transferred, he was fired - and it's unthinkable to me to do a new season without Kate, so I hope they can persuade her back.

Vincent has seemed so much happier since he's been off LOCI, BUT if it's what he wants to do, I'll certainly be there!

I'm with you Susan, and baygirl. Everything you said, Vincent is surely doing this for his fans. What a guy! And we, the fans are getting the fruits of his labor. I hope I hope Kate will be there too. I,m still on Cloud 9. I think Vincent will make sure this will be 100% GREAT or he wouldn,t be doing it.

I cannot imagine he would come back on the show. on several occasions he stated clearly he has no intentions whatsoever. Why would he ? The character has nothing we don't know yet, ratings are down, scripts have gone down since season 8. And Vincent has stated that while doing the show he had no time for his own projects and his family. I can't imagine he would give that up for a show that is down in rating. He is not the type of person who would do this for the money, so what is the motive for coming back after stating so clearly he wouldn't be back ? I can't think of any...

How fantastic! I am so happy. I'm sure VDO returned for several reasons. Maybe he realized how much he missed the show? Also, how many crew members in NYC are affected by LOCI not returning? These are long time friends of both VDO and Kate Erbe.

And lets face it - money has to be a factor as well. Which is nothing to be embarrassed about. I'm sure both Vincent and Kate, living in NYC, could use the cash.

Oh happy, happy day!

I'm thinking, Vincent has decided to let the Entertainer in him subsidize the Artist in him.

And I don't think he'd agree to do this unless the writers/storylines were of his liking. What will be interesting to see is HOW they bring Goren back. For all we know, Moran and his group will be taken down, and G&E will be back with Major Case.

It's quite amusing to see Dick Wolf talking about his passion for C.I. when he was prepared to sacrifice it for the Mothership not too long ago...

...and if Vincent is going back, it's because Vincent WANTS to go back. If he didn't, I don't think any amount of money would get him there. The show still needs him a darn sight more than he needs the show - and if this is the second time I said this, apologies, I got an 'error' message when I pressed 'publish'

They think they are ecstatic - what do they think we will be?

He's been doing so much charity work, maybe he sees this as an opportunity to earn enough cash to be able to do more.

Don't kid yourselves- it's All about the $$ on Vincent's part. Wolf made him an offer he could not refuse. Just hope that he doesn't disappoint all the fans who begged for his return.

I agree with just about everybody (except for that "gremlin" comment), especially with Lizzie. To Nikki and everybody, let me throw out a couple of ideas. First of all, this would be like a victory lap for Vincent and Kathryn. The scuttlebutt was that at the end of S8 GE/NBC/USA/Universal didn't consider their importance to Criminal Intent and dumped Goren and Eames without a second thought. Now though, it is obvious that the show failed miserably without them. It's got to feel pretty good to come back holding all the cards after being initially so heartlessly dismissed by the powers that be.

Second, maybe he wants a chance to have a real send-off season instead of the crap they gave us for S8. I was not so much ticked off that G&E left, but I was very disappointed as to how they left. I am not happy with the way GE, et. al. treated Mr. D'Onofrio and Ms. Erbe, but I did know their contracts were up and that S8 was likely the end. So when S8 was a crappy, jumbled mess, I was really, really unhappy. I knew G&E were not given the closing season they deserved, AND they failed to tie-up a bunch of story lines: what happened to Donnie, who put the rat in Goren's desk drawer, is Eames still hurt about his undercover work, when is she going to get the promotion she deserves, and what is going to happen with Bobby's niece?

I don't doubt Vincent is doing this in (large) part for the money- and I say "why not?" I want him to make all the money he can to fund his side projects- but, a part of me thinks that if there ever was an actor who would do this for the fans because he knows we were left out in the cold too, it would be him. I don't have any delusions that the parent company execs finally realized they should have given the fans a better closing season, but it is obvious by now that they at least see the value in it. Vincent and Kathryn, though, are probably, at least a little bit, thinking of the fans.

I just hope this isn't some kind of a hoax. If it isn't, and Vincent is truly coming back to CI, I say what I tried to say last night: Finally! All is right with the world! Well, almost - Katie, we want you back too!

Lizzie said...

If they want him back, I certainly hope they're paying him VERY well for his services. If you think Vincent is all about money Grimalkin, I can only assume you haven't been a 'fan' for very long because the evidence on his resume clearly proves $$ are NOT what matters the most to him.

I'm sure money was a factor - and I don't fault Vincent for thinking that way.

I hope that in addition to $$$ he got some sort of creative control - I think both he and Katie need this to keep the show real - considering how badly it was botched last year. I trust that the two of them would come up with a scenario that we would appreciate.

And I hope Katie signs on - unlike Vincent her IMDB lists nothing since Loyalty. I know she does theatre - but she is entitled to get $$$ out of the execs as well.

I'm still saddened by how badly TPTB handled the whole Goren/Eames episodes the last season plus the Loyalty episode. All under the guise of "we've added Jeff Goldblum" who then jumped ship as quick as he could - so much for loyalty!

I hope Vincent is getting a good deal out of TPTB. I just wonder if they can boot out Saffron Burrows and replace her that easily with Erbe, what with her having a contract and all. I hope they can (sorry Saffron).

Please.....no more sad, depressed, angst-ridden Goren. I would prefer if they reverted back to him being the confident, cocky, handsome and quirky crime fighter of the earlier seasons.
