Stage & Screen: Woodstock Film Festival's December events

By Timothy Malcolm
Times Herald-Record

With three events over the next three weeks, the Woodstock Film Festival is keeping busy heading into the winter.

The fun begins Saturday, when three accomplished vocalists will serenade using "Songs From the Silver Screen." Ann Osmond, Dennis Yerry and Robert Burke Warren will sing a cabaret-style revue of songs from movies including "The Graduate" and "The Blue Angel." The full repertoire couldn't be revealed, however.

I think it's going to be a real beautiful event," Blaustein said.

All proceeds go toward the Woodstock Film Festival and Hudson Valley Film Commission's capital campaign to secure a home in the Town of Woodstock for the Film Center, a facility for events, screenings and workshops.

Also approaching is a screening of a documentary about Wavy Gravy. "Saint Misbehavin'" will be shown at 4 p.m. Dec. 11 at Upstate Films Woodstock. The film looks at Hugh Romney, the iconic hippie-era clown who made his mark at the 1969 Woodstock Music & Art Fair and has spread goodwill throughout the world ever since.

The festival screened an unfinished "Saint Misbehavin'" years ago while the film — directed by Michelle Esrick — was still in production; obviously, Ben & Jerry's Wavy Gravy ice cream and plenty of red noses were part of the festivities. This time around, Wavy Gravy's wife and members of the film crew will be present.

"The message of the film is so much in line with what we do and who we are," Blaustein said. "(Esrick) has put years and years of nonstop work into the film."

The third event, Youth Day with Vincent D'Onofrio, is a rescheduled event from the festival occurring Dec. 17 at Onteora High School. D'Onofrio and a host of others — including filmmaker John Bowermaster — will speak with the region's students about life in the film industry. A screening of the Woodstock Film Festival's "Teen Films" selections will follow.

"I'm very happy and proud that we can give that to the area youth," Blaustein said. "We want them to go out there and succeed. It's such an exciting field."
