Actor Jay O. Sanders joins Law & Order: Criminal Intent cast, 2.10.11

Veteran character actor Jay O. Sanders has been tapped for a major new role on the final season of Law & Order: Criminal Intent on USA. He will play the new captain of the Major Case Squad and boss to Robert Goren (Vincent D'Onofrio) and Alexandra Eames (Kathryn Erbe). Sanders will appear in all eight episodes of the show's upcoming tenth season. This is the fourth captain on L&O:CI following Jamey Sheridan's Capt. James Deakins, Eric Bogosian's Capt. Danny Ross and, most recently, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio's Zoe Callas in Season 9. Sanders, who has rarely done TV, is not new to the L&O franchise. He has guest starred on both L&O:CI and the mothership L&O series. The actor, who has appeared in such movies as The Day After Tomorrow and Revolutionary Road, next co-stars in Green Lantern.

*****Jay O. Sanders appeared in Law & Order: Criminal Intent Season Two episode "Dead" as 'Harry Rowan'. For more on LO:CI Season Two. View clip of Jay O. Sanders in "Dead".

Anyone have an amnesia pill I can take so that I don't remember he was a perp back in the day?!! I hadn't realised there were so few actors they could chose from :0(

I'm not wild about this either.

I think its a good choice, and at least he is a francise regular rather than a newcomer.

Let's be happy we are having a captain and I think he is actually gonna be nice to Bobby, I hope anyway. We will just have to wait and see and be optimistic!

Does anyone else find this casting choice kind of...ironic?

I think this will work fine, even though he was a perp!

I love that episode he was in - it's one of my favorites!

Best line - at the end Eames tells Carver: "Eddie Ferguson doesn't wear caps."

Cracks me up every time!

He was at the first George Geronimo Gerke show that VDO did back in Oct of 2009, so I guess they're friends in RL. Thinking of him as the captain will take some getting used to but I think it will work out just fine.

I have to confess, my first thought on seeing this was 'You have GOT to be kidding...' I don't understand why they chose a 'franchise regular' unless they couldn't be bothered to look elsewhere

Lizzie :(

I don't think I'd mind this so much if he hadn't played such a memorable bad guy. It might help that the episode he was in took place so long ago, but I won't know until I see him.

It bothers me when a series casts a former guest star in a leading role, but at least it is Jay O. Sanders. He will be good in this role.
I like the idea of Goren starting over with a captain who has already "acquired the taste".

I think Jay will be just fine as the captain of MC. He's a good actor and can play many different roles. It's funny though, we've seen these episodes so many times, much more than TPTB or even Vincent himself realize. So, we might think of Jay as the perp in DEAD, but to most viewers, he was a bad guy in one LOCI epi several years ago.

It seems like a good choice to me. I have no problem with the fact that he has been in CI before. I'm just glad they have cast someone, and are almost ready to start filming.

I have a couple of problems with this, not just the actor, but the premise of the captain having been friends with Bobby at the academy.

First, the casting people son't seem to realise how dedicated fans are, and that we don't forget previous guest stars, because we watch the episodes over and over again, even when they are not actually being repeated on the networks.

Second, what is the timeline for all this? Bobby went to college and then was in the army. Do we know precisely for how long? I think we have to guesstimate. So this captain was a late starter, like Bobby (can't believe he's supposed to be younger, or at least, not by much) - how did he come to be captain when long time-server Eames only got her chance by default?

Third, he is bigger than Vincent, and this is by definition just wrong!
