“American Falls” is a short film by Be’ Garrett, starring Vincent D’Onofrio, Denis O’Hare and Louis Ozawa Changchien. In a rural town in southern Idaho a Japanese-American family owns and operates a small motel. The year is 1965, the height of the Civil Rights Era. One night a stranger sporting ‘city’ clothes checks in, the first African-American man that Toru Suzuki’s children have ever seen. Yoshiko, Toru’s precocious 13 year old daughter, takes it upon herself to solve the mystery of this man, especially after two detectives come knocking on their door in the middle of the night.

About the Production:

We were intrigued by the story of Yoshiko Suzuki, a 13 year old Japanese girl living an isolated life with her family in American Falls, Idaho in 1965. This all changes the night a stranger, a Black man, checks into her family’s motel. When detectives show up looking for a Black man accused of murdering his wife, Toru, Yoshiko’s father, must decide whether to give up the man to the cops. It makes us question how past experiences and beliefs effect our way of thinking. It forces us to ask what we would do if faced with a similar predicament.

Current Status:

The project is currently in pre-production, looking to start shooting at the end of August.
