'Law & Order' star Vincent D'Onofrio hits the beach for Coney Island sandcastle building competition

He may play a tough-as-nails cop on TV, but it was just another day at the beach yesterday for "Law & Order" star Vincent D'Onofrio.

Spatula in hand, the Brooklyn-born actor teamed with his wife, Carin, and kids to compete in the 21st annual Sand Sculpting Contest in Coney Island, building a nearly 2-foot tall castle - and a scary-looking dragon inside the fortress.

"We watched this morning on YouTube how to do sandcastles, and we just figured it out when we got here," said D'Onofrio, more commonly known as moody Det. Robert Goren on the hit crime drama.

He even drew a blueprint of the medieval structure on a piece of paper before heading to Brooklyn.

"We never thought we were as good as we are doing this," he said.

Team D'Onofrio took second place in the family category at the competition.

About 30 amateurs from across the city, and two professionals, used 50 mounds of sand dumped on the Boardwalk to mold sculptures ranging from dragons to sharks to buxom babes.

Two creative beach bums shared the top prize.

Air conditioning-installer Victor Ozan, 38, of East New York, built a 4-foot-wide elephant using only a shovel. While New Jersey-native Hector Patino built a life-size woman posing in a sexy position.

"I'm with this woman here," said Patino, 52, pointing toward his girlfriend. "She was my model."
