Renowned Actors Take the Stage for PushCart Prize Benefit

Last Saturday at Guild Hall WordTheatre put on "Speaking in Tongues," an evening of performances in support of the Pushcart Prize Fellowships. The event brought the stars of "Boardwalk Empire," "Glee," "Law & Order," "True Blood" and others to share the stage.

The evening featured performances by Amy Irving, CCH Pounder of "Avatar," Dennis O'Hare and Chris Bauer of "True Blood," Jessalyn Gilsig of "Glee," and Kathryn Erbe of "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" and more.

Cedering Fox, who founded WordTheatre in 2003, produced and directed the performances. WordTheatre each year presents live performances of contemporary short stories by renowned actors and authors, and in the past has organized a handful of events at Guild Hall, the most recent in 2009. The group is stationed in New York, Los Angeles, and London.

The evening benefited endowments for the Pushcart Prize, an annual literary project that each year honors the best poetry short fiction, essays, and other short works published in small presses. This year is the 35th anniversary of the Pushcart Prize, considered "one of the most important publishing projects in American History" by "Publishers Weekly."

The great Vincent D'Onofrio and life after "Criminal Intent"

Impre.com, 7.26.11
By David Lara

He delighted the audience for ten years. Now this tv show it is over, but the career of this human chameleon goes on.

Robert Goren is a very complex tv character, one that only a multi-talented actor could represent on screen. Vincent D'Onofrio embodied him for 10 years and got a whole audience wondering: why this amazing performer has never gotten any major acting award?

We all know of course that award ceremonies often have little to do with true talent and a lot with Hollywood connections. Mr. D'Onofrio seems nonchalant about it, better focusing on giving the best of him with every new role.

His "Law & Order" partner in crime, Kathryn Erbe, seems to follow the same philosophy: she's an extraordinary actress as proved by many films and tv appearences through her career. And when we watch Vincent D'Onofrio and Miss Kathryn together solving the most atrocious crimes and major cases, is like seeing an Ella Fitzgerald & Frank Sinatra duet: two of the best ever in one scene and one stage.

One movie in particular speaks volumes of D'Onofrio's talent and passioned delivery: Dan Ireland's A Whole Wide World (1996). He and Reneé Zellweger gave their best to play Robert Howard and Novalyne Price. The legendary love story of the famous Pulp Fiction writer and Miss Novalyne took a new meaning through this movie. D'Onofrio was able to bring tears to our eyes and smiles to our faces at the same time. Superb indeed.

Vincent D'Onofrio is now involved in two different movie projects one of those starring alongside Bruce Willis. We wish him nothing but good luck and Alexandra Eames' final line to him in Criminal Intent's "Loyalty" episode says it best: "You are the best Bobby... and you'll always be".

We agree Eames.

Thanks maculae87!

About the Production:

We were intrigued by the story of Yoshiko Suzuki, a 13 year old Japanese girl living an isolated life with her family in American Falls, Idaho in 1965. This all changes the night a stranger, a Black man, checks into her family’s motel. When detectives show up looking for a Black man accused of murdering his wife, Toru, Yoshiko’s father, must decide whether to give up the man to the cops. It makes us question how past experiences and beliefs effect our way of thinking. It forces us to ask what we would do if faced with a similar predicament.

Current Status:

The project is currently in pre-production, looking to start shooting at the end of August.

Inwood Filmmakers Turn to Social Media to Raise Funds

DNAinfo, 7.23.11
By Carla Zanoni

INWOOD — When Inwood resident Josh Liveright set out to make a film with his friend and colleague Be’ Garrett he decided to add another tool to his traditional method of calling and emailing investors to raise funds — he started putting out feelers via social media.

And so was borne the idea for the social media fundraising drive for "American Falls," a film that asks, “What happens when your ideas of race are put to the test?”

The film crew, which includes four Upper Manhattan residents, has set out to raise $20,000 in seed money to convince an interested producer to commit to a matching grant to fund the film.

They now have four days to raise the remaining approximately $4,500.
“This kind of fundraising is more emotional instead of just hammering away,” Liveright said. “You want to find a window into people’s interest and get them jazzed about it. You’re tapping into those sources through the virtual reality of social media.”

“We figured we would start the momentum and have people come on board to support the film,” said Liveright, who has been busy reaching out to potential backers on Facebook and Twitter, as well as Kickstarter, a social media fundraising tool.

Kickstarter has recently gained popularity with groups looking to fund everything from new changing rooms for a public pool in Washington Heights to helping a performer buy his own baby grand piano for solo performances in Washington Square Park.

If the film's creators are able to raise the cash needed, the movie is set to star actors Vincent D'Onofrio, whose latest acting credit is on "Law & Order: Criminal Intenet," Denis O'Hare of "True Blood" fame and Curtiss Cook, who also stars in the "Law & Order" franchise. Cook was most recently on the big screen in "Shutter Island."

"American Falls" tells the story of how the life of a Japanese-American family that owns and operates a small motel in rural southern Idaho is changed when a black man checks into the hotel.

The man is the first African-American person the family’s children have met, which motivates the family’s 13-year-old precocious daughter “to solve the mystery of this man, especially after two detectives come knocking on their door in the middle of the night.”

Liveright said the story examines the relationship between father and daughter, with a nod to the relationship between Atticus Finch and his daughter Scout in the American literary classic "To Kill a Mockingbird."

“The story is about going through a rite of passage,” Liveright said. “It’s a good story that has something to say, that’s the kind of stuff we like to sink our teeth into.”

Yishane Lee, a former Inwood resident of five years, heard about the film through Facebook and donated $100.

She said she made the donation because the film resonated with her experiences growing up Chinese in a mostly white suburb, but also because of the connection to Inwood.

“While I've moved,” she wrote in an email. “I still appreciate and support folks there, as well as the ‘hood itself.”

No Reprieve for Law & Order: CI

TV Line, 7.15.11
by Matt Webb Mitovich

'It Was a Good Series Finale,' Says USA Network Boss

Though franchise founder Dick Wolf had been angling for Law & Order: Criminal Intent to earn a reprieve by delivering a solid 10th and final season, a resurrection simply won’t be happening, USA Network’s top brass tell TVLine.

Asked if there was any chance for a semi-miraculous save and Season 11 order, given the warm welcome that returning regulars Vincent D’Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe received, USA co-president Jeff Wachtel answered, “No — and this is said with respect for the show, respect for Dick [Wolf], and most significantly with respect to the audience.”

At the time that Season 10 was greenlit, with D’Onofrio’s Goren and Erbe’s Eames back on duty, Wachtel says, “We had a conversation internally, and [NBC Universal chair] Bonnie [Hammer] was phenomenally supportive of [the idea that] you’ve got to honor your contract with the audience. We as a cable network don’t want to pull the plug and leave people being upset — ‘Wait, what happened to my show?’ — so we very carefully and wonderfully staged a final season.”

Despite premiering strongly (with 5.6 million total viewers) and averaging some 1.6 mil in the coveted 18-49 demo throughout the season, Criminal Intent was not profitable for USA — a liability that was foreseen well ahead of time. “Given the ratings we could anticipate, and given the expense of the show, we knew it was a money-losing venture for us,” Wachtel notes.

Though some viewers feel the episode that closed the decade-old procedural didn’t scream “series finale,” Wachtel contends that all signs were there if you looked for them. “The fact that we introduced a psychiatrist (played by Julia Ormond) into the mix, and that a significant part of the season was about the healing of Bobby Goren and taking him out of an awful journey and into a place of relative emotional health…. For a Dick Wolf show that was much more character-based than you ever see.”

As the final hour wrapped, Goren emerged from his final mandatory shrink session and headed off to a new crime scene with Eames. “We felt that was a great place to leave things,” says Wachtel. “It was a good series finale.”

The silver lining to Criminal Intent‘s definitively final run? As part of its legacy, it leaves its lead-out, In Plain Sight, a healthier series. “That was a great opportunity, to pair [them] on Sunday nights, where both had a lot of strength,” explains USA co-president Chris McCumber. “This past Sunday, when [In Plain Sight] didn’t have the Criminal Intent lead-in, it actually grew [in three target demo measures]. The tandem ended up making In Plain Sight an even stronger show.”

Thanks Linda!

Lyrics to "Vincent D'Onofrio (You Make My Heart Race)

By Mandee Schwartz

OFFICIAL LYRICS:

We're glued to the couch every Satuday night.
I love to watch cops and drunk men fight.
I live to see police chase a killer on meth
and hear about how he strangled his dealer to death.

(sigh)

My goal in life is to nab a killer,
publicly expose him and end his thriller.
If I could end some punk's criminal schemes,
then we could finally meet the man of our dreams.

Chorus:
Vincent D'Onofrio, you make my heart race.
I'd do anything to help you solve a major case.
We'd roam the streets, stopping criminals in their tracks.
And at night we'd sit, drink red wine, and relax.

I'd earn my degree in criminal justice from Phoenix university.
Then Vincent and I would get down to some stuff that's really gritty.
We'd sort through evidence in a rundown motel, just the two of us alone.
We'd find a buzzsaw used to cut into a prostitute's jaw bone.

Maybe there's a girl who was beaten with a crowbar.
And then raped with it and left for dead in her car.
Vincent would straddle over her like I wish he was straddling me.
And he'd smell her hair and declare, "She died at half past three."

Chorus:
Vincent D'Onofrio, you make my heart race.
I'd do anything to help you solve a major case.
During the day we'd roam the streets, stopping criminals in their tracks.
And at night we'd sit, drink red wine, and relax.

(spoken)
When Vincent D'Onofrio is interrogating someone, he gets right in their face. Sometimes he'll lean over a table and force them to look him dead the eye. I love when he yells because you can see his perfect teeth. I mean, I don't think they're his real teeth because when he was in Full Metal Jacket and that movie with Cameron Diaz and Keanu Reeves where he's wearing a blue tuxedo, he doesn't have those teeth. But those pearly whites mixed with that flawless designer stubble. And holy shit those sideburns.

(singing again)
Holy shit those sideburns!
Holy shit those sideburns!

Chorus:
Vincent D'Onofrio, you make my heart race.
I'd do anything to help you solve a major case
We'd roam the streets, stopping criminals in their tracks.
And at night we'd sit, drink red wine, and relax.

Vincent D'Onofrio you make my heart race
(Riffed lyrics until blackout.)

Thanks Mandee S.

RABBIT 07/14/2011

Yesterday was the day I got to perform as a victim for this fabulous movie. I am NOW an admirer of Vincent D'Onofrio. To me...he came across as warm & gentle and kind. He's got the most sincere brown eyes and makes you feel so much at ease the minute you walk in the room with him. I felt terribly sad for some reason after I was finished my performance.

Former Law & Order star shooting movie in Regina

Video

CTV Regina, 7.12.11
by Lindsay Dunn

Hollywood has made its way to Saskatchewan and the action is taking place in downtown Regina.

The movie ‘Rabbit' is being filmed in Regina and Moose Jaw. It is a psychological thriller that stars Law & Order alum Vincent D'Onofrio and ‘Legend of the Falls' actress Julia Ormond.

Director of the movie Jennifer Lynch says the movie is "about how real monsters are made and the circle of abuse and so it's a very scary film and it's really about the plight and life of the boy after being kept by the man and the choices we make after being wounded".

This isn't the first time Lynch has shot a movie in Saskatchewan. In 2008 she shot the movie ‘Surveillance', which also started Ormond, in Regina.

"I absolutely love Saskatchewan. Regina is my second home. When I shot surveillance…. All I could do was write to try and come back", Lynch said before filming a scene.

'Rabbit' is expected to wrap at the end of July.

Scary movie shot in Moose Jaw

MJTimes, 7.8.11
by Joshua Campbell

Beware all Moose Javians! A psychotic, serial-killing cab driver is on the lose and he may be on his way to pick you up.

But don’t worry, it’s only a movie.

Rabbit, directed by Jennifer Lynch and starring Vincent D’Onofrio (Law & Order) and Julia Ormond (Legends of the Fall), is a psychological thriller about a serial killer (D’Onofrio) who kidnaps and raises a young boy to become his protégé. The boy — played by rising Vancouver star Evan Bird — has to make a decision if he will follow in the killer’s footsteps or hold onto the humanity that he had in his previous life with his parents.

David Buelow, one of the producers of the upcoming thriller (he is joined by Lee Nelson and local producer Rhonda Baker), said the contrast of Moose Jaw and utter “vastness” of the Saskatchewan prairie was ideal for crafting the film.

“We needed a really remote house that would be on the edge of town,” he said. “Creatively, this was exactly what we were looking for.”

Buelow hopes the film will attract a wide audience.

“It’s a psychological thriller, not a horror movie,” said Buelow, who has produced films for more than a decade with Envision Media Arts. “It’ll be kind of like Silence of the Lambs or 7even.

“(D’Onofrio) plays a cab driver, who picks up his victims in the city and takes them out to his remote dwelling,” said Buelow. “I don’t want to give away the rest.”

In addition to its thematic benefits and lower-budget potential, Buelow says Moose Jaw is a very “film-friendly” city.

“The director, Jen Lynch, filmed Surveillance in Saskatchewan and really wanted to come back,” he said. “She’s a huge fan of this area.”

A Los Angeles native, this was Buelow’s first time to Moose Jaw and Saskatchewan.

“It’s just one big prairie,” he said, smiling. “In California, you can’t go anywhere without seeing a mountain.”

As for the people, Buelow says they’ve lived up to Lynch’s promise of being super friendly and co-operative.

“We hired quite a few Moose Jaw natives (25 extras) for a shoot at the Galaxy (Cinemas),” said Buelow. “They can look for themselves on the big screen. We even featured some of your mosquitoes in the movie.”

Rabbit is not the first film to be shot in Moose Jaw.

The city has played host to numerous films throughout the past 10 years, including Surveillance, Just Friends (Ryan Reynolds, Amy Smart) and Sleepwalking (Charlize Theron produced and acted).

Susanne Bell, CEO of SaskFilm and film commissioner for the province, agrees that Moose Jaw’s combination of setting, low costs and film savvy makes it ideal for filmmaking.

“There such a diversity of looks that are standing right there (in Moose Jaw),” she said. “We don’t have to build the sets. It’s just right there.”

After working with Lynch on Surveillance, Bell is really excited to have her back.

“She became a part of the Saskatchewan film fabric when she worked here,” says Bell. “We couldn’t wait to have her back.”

Rabbit is expected to release sometime in 2012.

"Rabbit" Being Shot in MJ

Discover Moose Jaw, 7.7.11
by Brent Douglas

Film crews are back in Moose Jaw as our city plays host to another movie.

The cameras started rolling on the weekend for "Rabbit". Envision Media Arts out of Los Angeles is working on the psychological thriller starring Vincent D'Onofrio from Full Metal Jacket and most recently, Law and Order: Criminal Intent along with Julia Ormond from Legends of the Fall.

Producer David Buelow says the story follows a serial killer who kidnaps a boy and raises him like a son.

"We're filming actually in a rural area and we're using a house on a farm. It's very remote and this is where the killer lives. We're filming some back roads there. Then we're also doing some stuff in more upscale neighbourhoods for the next couple of days in Moose Jaw at some of the nicer houses. We're filming both the exterior and interior of those homes in Moose Jaw and then at least in one of the garages," said Buelow.

Filming will continue in Moose Jaw for about a week before shifting to Regina. Rabbit is expected to be released to theatre sometime next year.

Thoughts on Vincent D'Onofrio and two of his films

Reader cmurf100 recently had the opportunity to view two of Vincent D'Onofrio's films - Naked Tango[1991] and Kill the Irishman[2010]. She shared her thoughts on the films and on discovering Vincent D'Onofrio.

I admit a year ago I couldn’t have picked Vincent D'Onofrio out of a police lineup of two. My husband began watching all things Law & Order at night when no ball games were on, and Criminal Intent quickly became our favorite…we both developed crushes on the lead detectives. Once you’ve seen Bobby Goren in the interrogation room a few times, you want more, so I googled D'Onofrio to see what else he’d been in. I devoured every film and every old episode of LOCI I could get my hands on in a period of 3 months, and so now have deemed myself qualified to provide commentary on his career.

Gavin, Sam, Cholo, and the guy from Claire Dolan (if you’ve seen that one you’ll know why it’s easy to forget his name) were pretty hot. And he WAS Mr. Wonderful after all. Soon I wasn’t just googling “Vincent D'Onofrio”, I was googling “Vincent D'Onofrio naked”…but who hasn’t done that? What if he continued down the path of romantic lead? What if he took the path of Hugh Jackman instead of James Gandolfini? Strictly by chance, Naked Tango and Kill the Irishman arrived in my mailbox within 24 hours of each other. Two gangster movies. This made for a great opportunity to see him both ways, charismatic leading man and veteran character actor, and decide if I think he took the right path.

Naked Tango was a strange movie, not the best writing. The premise was difficult to swallow…a gangster obsessed with the tango…and, for god’s sake, how could she not love him? Even so, I can tell you that no matter what stage of life, no matter what age, marital status, or state of health, Vincent D’Onofrio as Cholo would have been my triggerman. Probably still finding himself as an actor, but so confident in movement and in tone. When he was on screen, you knew something good was going to happen.

In Kill the Irishman, D'Onofrio also plays a gangster, numbers man John Nardi. I’ve heard interviews where D'Onofrio says he was trying to play this part in a different way, an anti-Sopranos type of guy. He succeeded. As a fan I think what I appreciated most was there was no Goren in this character. Every actor, including the big guy, have certain mannerisms and vocal patterns that tend to pop up in many characters they play. If you look closely, you will see many of Goren’s hand movements, inflections and odd speech patterns, although perhaps not as pronounced, in D’Onofrio’s earlier work. Everything about Nardi, however is unique. Although they are both gangsters, Cholo and Nardi even stab guys in completely different ways. I love Goren and everything D'Onofrio has done with the character, but it was great to see him prove he has a lot more to say as an actor. A lot more.

D’Onofrio can take up the screen if he wants…see my previous comment about Goren in the interrogation room. But to paraphrase Cholo, it’s not that he couldn’t, it’s that he wouldn’t. He’s found his comfort zone as a character actor, and I’m okay with that. (Would I love to see another nude scene? Sure, although it may not be a good career move at 52.) The young leading man served his purpose. He opened doors for the character actor that was, in my opinion, meant to be. And the young leading man will always be there for me when I need him thanks to NetFlix and Amazon. When I want to appreciate him as an actor, I’ll watch Staten Island or a favorite LOCI episode. But sometimes, to be honest, I could just watch the man spit and that’d be fine.

Saving Goren & Eames: The Tie Clips and Skittles Campaign!

Saving Goren and Eames Now has organized a new campaign to bring back our favorite detectives.

We want more Goren and Eames!
And we want USA Network to sit up and take notice

Haven't we all been watching Goren's tie clip go higher and occasionally go off kilter over the last 10 years? Message boards have dedicated pages and pages to Goren's tie clip and it's placement. And don't we all love to see Alex eating her Skittles to keep her energy up? We even sent Vincent a tie clip and Kathryn some Skittles in the binders we put together last year. We've decided to use Goren's tie clip and Eames' Skittles as symbols of our desire for their return.

So we’re urging you to send
Tie Clips and Skittles to USA Network.
I’m sure there are oodles of abandoned tie clips at thrift stores which can be acquired inexpensively and whether you send a bag of Skittles or just the wrapper or even a picture of Skittles, we think they’ll get the message.

Before you send off your tie clips and Skittles, please take a photo and add it to our Gallery of Tie Clips and Skittles here: http://photobucket.com/OperationTieClipsAndSkittles
(just follow the Photobucket directions for uploading your photos). Tell us who you are in the description – if you have a blog post where the photo is uploaded, please feel free to add a link to that specific blog post.
When we have a few pictures, we’ll turn the album into a slide show and post it in our sidebar.

Next…. Where do you send your Tie Clips and Skittles?
