'Law & Order' actor Vincent D'Onofrio calls real cops the 'real deal'

NEW ROCHELLE — The real cops seemed ready to hire TV detective Vincent D’Onofrio as he stepped up to the podium at a law enforcement luncheon Wednesday.“If he was on the job, this is the guy you’d be asking advice from,” said retired Cortlandt police chief Robert Pavone, chairman of New York State Crime Stoppers, which hosted the event in cooperation with Westchester County police at the Greentree Country Club.

D’Onofrio, who plays Detective Robert Goren in the series “Law & Order: Criminal Intent,” is used to the special treatment from police. As guest speaker at a ceremony attended by more than 200 investigators and officials from law enforcement agencies in Westchester, Putnam, Rockland, Dutchess and Orange counties, he shared a story about how Boston police took him on an emotional tour showing the steps they took to catch the marathon massacre suspects. At Wednesday’s ceremony, the actor who also played villain Edgar in “Men in Black,” acknowledged he’s kind of a wimp in real life.

“I would run out of the building as I heard shots fired, and I would pass you guys as you run in,” he said. “You guys are the real deal.”

Back to business, officials with Crime Stoppers unveiled new measures they’re deploying to assist local officers in pursuing investigations. The organization recently launched a free mobile phone app that gives the public another way to send anonymous tips using voice, photo and email directly from their smart phones.

As usual, rewards are offered for tips that lead to an arrest and conviction. Details can be found on the group’s website, nyscrimestoppers.org.

Meanwhile, Westchester County police Commissioner George Longworth announced plans to expand its partnership with Crime Stoppers in solving cases.

“We know the program works because we have seen it work,” Longworth said. “Sometimes it takes the promise of anonymity, or the promise of a cash reward, to motivate someone with valuable information to come forward.”
