Vincent to attend screening of "Heroes Behind the Badge: Sacrifice and Survival" at Pleasant Grove HS

Pl. Grove honorary colonels help police

With limitations on both time and budget, law enforcement agencies can face difficult challenges while trying to protect the public. That is why Pleasant Grove's Honorary Colonels step in to help. Founded in 2010, the Honorary Colonels Association gives aid to the police department in a variety of ways.

In the past few months, the Colonels, a group of local citizens, have provided much needed equipment, given officer of the quarter and officer of the year awards, donated hundreds of dollars to fund Shop With a Cop and supported the Citizens Academy, a law enforcement awareness program that is offered to citizens.

The Colonels have also provided most of the funds for the department's K9 program. Being able to have the K9 program as part of the department brings a higher level of service to the citizens, said Police Chief Mike Smith.

The Colonels recently raised more than $12,000 to purchase new radios for the city's police officers. With this amount, the department was able to get seven new radios, according to Smith. "This was huge for our department," he said.

"Currently, we do not have in-car radios due to budget restraints, so the portable radio is all the officers have as a lifeline to dispatch," said Smith. "When our radios started to fail, the Colonels jumped into action and were able to raise some money and continue to raise money as we still have a need for more radios."

According to association president Mike Carter, the group raised funds this year by sponsoring a showing of the documentary "Heroes Behind the Badge." While the movie was shown in many locations nationally, Pleasant Grove's showing was the most successful.
The proceeds from the event were used to purchase equipment for the police department, according to Carter. Additionally, money raised was donated to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.
The next fundraiser will be the first Utah showing of the follow-up documentary "Heroes Behind the Badge: Sacrifice and Survival." The film will be shown on Feb. 28 at Pleasant Grove High School. Actor Vincent D'Onofrio, who narrated the film, will be in attendance.

Carter said that members of the Honorary Colonels meet together once a month to discuss the needs of the department and make plans to help.

Members of the association have either volunteered to be involved or have been asked by department members, said Smith. "If someone wants to join the Colonels, they must fill out an application, pass a background check and be voted in by a majority vote of the membership," he said.
