Two independent films set to begin shooting in Chicago

Ten years after making it to the finals of Matt Damon and Ben Affleck's "Project Greenlight," Chicago filmmaker Duane Edwards has lined up his first feature film project, slated to begin shooting locally this fall.

The script, by Frederick Mensch, is a dark comedy called "Supreme Ruler" and stars Ron Livingston ("Boardwalk Empire") and Vincent D'Onofrio ("Law & Order: Criminal Intent") as two men battling to win the top leadership position in their local social club.

"It's based on the Elks, but we call them the Buffalos," said Edwards. "Ron's character is just so immersed in becoming the Supreme Ruler of his local lodge...he's blinded by this obsession, and it's at the cost of his family and his job. D'Onofrio plays a past Supreme Ruler who doesn't care for this guy's enthusiasm, so he runs against him."

The setting is Decatur, plus a trip to Chicago for a large Buffalo convention. (Hat tip to my editor who remembered that "The Flintstones" also featured a lodge called the Loyal Order of Water Buffalo.) Edwards described the comedic tone as somewhere between "Election" and "Fargo."
"When it comes to an independent movie, it's like rolling a rock up a mountain," he said. The cast also includes Marcia Gay Harden, Anthony Anderson, Billy Zane and Natalie Zea.

Despite the caliber of the actors involved (as well as producer Stephen L'Heureux, whose "Sin City: A Dame to Kill For" opens in theaters this summer) the film is resolutely small.

"You would think with Ron Livingston in my cast it would be so easy to raise the money," Edwards said, "but investors want to know if you have George Clooney in your movie because everything's about international sales. If it doesn't resonate in international sales, investors don't think they'll recoup their money." (Uh, so apparently "Office Space" isn't a cult hit outside the U.S.???)

There is at least one potential complication at the moment. D'Onofrio was just cast in "Daredevil," Marvel's new series for Netflix, which is expected to debut next year. So far D'Onofrio is still on board for "Supreme Ruler," Edwards said. But if the "Daredevil" schedule takes over, there's not much that can be done.

"We're not a major $10 million film where we can block everyone's time," said Edwards . "I'm more like, 'Hey, are we good?'" — and crosses his fingers.

This is the reality of indie filmmaking. You roll with the punches. Shooting is planned to begin in October.

SDCC 2014: Daredevil Netflix Show Comes Out In May

Even the very last Marvel panel of Comic-Con International 2014 had some news left to trot out.
The panel in question (live blogged on was devoted to the 75th anniversary of Marvel comics and the 50th anniversary of Daredevil. The talk eventually turned toward the Daredevil TV series that will lead off Marvel’s partnership with Netflix, and it was revealed that the show will start airing in May 2015.

Marvel Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada was on the panel along with writers Mark Waid and Dan Slott, and he said working on Daredevil reminded him of the early days of Marvel Knights. That was the initiative that saw Quesada and Jimmy Palmiotti assume control over Marvel’s (mostly) street level heroes in an effort to revitalize flagging sales, and in the process, Quesada ended up on art duties for a Daredevil arc written by director Kevin Smith.

Quesada spoke briefly about how the series was shooting on location in New York City, but declined to answer a question about how Matt Murdock would interact with Iron Fist, who will also star in his own Netflix series. He did say that it would be exciting seeing the characters unite in the Defenders mini-series that will bring Daredevil, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones and Luke Cage together after their individual shows are complete.

Now that its release date is firmed up, Marvel fans can look forward to seeing Daredevil, starring Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock/Daredevil, Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk, Elden Henson as Foggy Nelson and Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, next May.
