New Film: In Dubious Battle

James Franco has assembled an all-star cast that includes Selena Gomez, Vincent D'Onofrio, Robert Duvall, Ed Harris, Bryan Cranston and Danny McBride for his adaptation of the John Steinbeck novel In Dubious Battle.

Writer Matt Rager (As I Lay Dying) adapted the feature screenplay based on the novel.

Principal photography on the film will commence in March.

The movie continues Franco's fascination with Steinbeck; the actor-turned-filmmaker recently made his Broadway debut with a revival of Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men.
The original novel portrays the struggle between labor and capital in 1930s America as close to all-out warfare. Published in 1936, "In Dubious Battle" is considered Steinbeck's first major work. Set in a fictionalized valley in California, the story explores themes Steinbeck later continued to develop: group behavior, social injustice, man's inhumanity to man. A labor conflict between migrant apple pickers and the local growers' association is the backdrop against which Jim Nolan (Franco) becomes involved in the labor movement and rapidly matures as he learns what it means to do organizational fieldwork.

AMBI Distribution will co-represent the film's domestic rights with CAA.
"I am very inspired by James' work and cannot wait to collaborate with him on this project with these remarkable artists," said AMBI's Andrea Iervolino. "This film will be stunning portrait of strife and violence, and bringing it to life with such a remarkably talented cast fortifies our belief that we are creating a classic."

The CAA-repped Franco continues to fill his slate with diverse material including "I Am Michael," which he also directed and bowed at Sundance this past week.

Principal photography on the film will start in March.

Vincent D'Onofrio's 'Kingpin' will be just as important as Daredevil...

You Can't Imagine How Tight The Daredevil Costume Is

I don’t know about you guys, but my skin starts to crawl if I wear clothes that are more constrictive than comfortable, so there’s no way I could ever be a superhero. (Added to a lengthy list of reasons.) According to Charlie Cox, the star of Netflixand Marvel’s upcoming Daredevil series, slapping the vigilante’s costume on in a well-oiled hurry is no easy feat. In fact, it’s pretty impossible.

Cox spoke with E! Online about his costume while at the Screen Actors Guild Awards this weekend, and he made it sound like the kind of hassle that only a hero (or an actor playing a hero) can put up with.
It’s pretty tight, I’m not going to lie. They’ve done such a great job. I can’t wait for the fans to really see it. But put it this way, there is no world where you can change in a phone box. It takes four people and about 45 minutes.”

In my head, I have no problem believing that someone who is blinded can develop additional superpowered senses, but it somehow removes me from things to know that it takes that long to don the cowl and costume. Matt Murdock would have to just wear the suit all the time with normal clothes over it, just waiting for the split-second when danger strikes and making excuses for why he looks so bulky all of a sudden.

And what about when he has to take a super piss? That actually won’t be that much of a problem for the actor.
They’re very clever about it. You get three zippers. You zip them all up, but when you have to wee, you just have to zip one down – the wee zipper.”

If only “wee zipper” made it into the show somehow. Fans have yet to get their peepers the iconic red Daredevil suit, as the only official images coming from the Marvel series have shown either everyday Matt or black-suited Daredevil. I certainly hope it’s easy to get around in, now knowing how long it takes to get into it. What comic book fans don’t need is someone that looks stiffer in the suit than Ben Affleck did in Mark Steven Johnson’s film version.
We don’t know too much about where Daredevil is headed, narrative-wise, beyond having the character serving up justice on a dark platter in Hell’s Kitchen, New York. The big bad he’ll be taking on will be Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin, a villain who will reportedly be just as important as Daredevil as the season goes on.

Regardless of what he’s wearing from one scene to the next, Matt Murdock will cartwheel and kick his way to audiences when Daredevil premieres on Netflix on April 10.
